Until the terrorist attacks of 2001 and the Enron fraud disaster in 2002, a satisfactory data management strategy was limited to having back-ups and a disaster recovery programme. The benefits from archival storage are greatest in specialised management in a separate data centre away from the operational and back-up data. Removing archival materials reduce the data load, often to around 70% throughout the infrastructure network, freeing up managerial resources and improving services locally. Archival data can then be administered with a distinct mission relevant to risk-management and broad corporate goals for the long-term.
